A Letter from the Head Organizer
I get asked this question quite often: “Why do you care?”
“Why do you care so much about problems that aren’t your own?”
My response is usually “why don’t you?”
And yes, I could look at a lot of the problems marginalized people face in this country and just say “not my monkey, not my circus”, but it would be so removed from reality that even Hollywood would laugh it off if presented as a script.
The fact of the matter is this: yes, my name and my skin color would suggest that I am as white and heterosexual a man as any in this country, but there are a lot of things that people don’t realize when they just simply look at the surface:
I am the son of a Hispanic man who came here into the United States legally, so problems facing the Hispanic community affect me.
My brother-in-law and niece are both black, so the systemic racism that still plagues the black community affects me.
My sister has been a victim in the past of domestic violence, my mother a victim of emotional and verbal abuse, so women’s rights strike a very near-and-dear chord with me. Plus as the father of a little girl, I want to see my daughter live the best and happiest life that she possibly can.
As a not-very-well-off man in this country, things like inflation and corporate greed affect me greatly.
As an empathetic man who views members of the LGBTQ+ community as human beings, living and breathing the same as you and I, their woes emotionally impact me.
And as a member of the human race, climate change affects me. Sure, I likely have fewer days ahead of me than I do behind me, but I much prefer to leave behind a world that (again, going to the dad card) my children can actually live in.
So when a certain vile detestible person was recently elected President of the United States, with the media doing very little to nothing to keep it from happening, I knew I had to do something to help the people in my life, even if it’s not enough. And I figured I could probably use my powers as a web developer for good use.
Hence this website.
An online community center, where Mexicans can bond together in the face of mass deportations.
Where the black community can bond together to combat the threat of systemic racism.
Where the LGBTQ+ community can unite and stay informed on the neverending fight for the same rights and liberties that the rest of us take for granted.
Where women and nonbinary people can continue to be informed about changes that are affecting their daily lives.
And where the rest of us can stay up-to-date on the changes in our global climate and international geopolitical scope, all without the sensationalism and muddying-of-waters that the media is notorious for.
And if I can help even ten people with this site, be it by informing them of things coming up or helping them with their grocery bill this month, my feeling of fulfillment will be…maybe not complete, but just a little closer to completion.
I want this website to be where people from all walks of life can take something from it, not just marginalized peoples. So please, even if you don’t think your relatives, siblings, parents, children, or neighbors can benefit from this site, share it with them anyway. You could be saving a life with the information on this site. (We are also including sections for mental health awareness and disabled peoples, including a section on Medicare and Social Security and are always open to including even more, if the opportunity presents itself.)
We also do our best to not demonize any group of people on this site. Again, we want everybody to benefit from this online tool.
Come in, make yourself at home, take a look around, and let’s all remember we’re all on this ball of dirt and water together, our only home in the cosmos (currently), and thus we are all part of this vast 8-billion-people community known as humanity.
At the end of the day, humanity and love are all that matters.
Thank you, and welcome to Come 2Gether.
